Hill Street South Reservoir
Hill Street South Reservoir Project
At Specialised Concrete Products Ltd (SCP), we take pride in helping shape New Zealand’s infrastructure landscape through precision engineering, innovation, and craftsmanship. The Hill Street South Reservoir Project is another great example of this commitment in action — combining complex precast and prestressed concrete elements with careful planning, manufacturing, transport, and installation.
Project Overview
The Hill Street South Reservoir required a range of large, highly engineered concrete components to form the structural elements of the reservoir. Working closely with Fulton Hogan, and Tasman District Council (TDC) as the principal, SCP was entrusted to manufacture and supply a series of bespoke precast and prestressed components.
Our sister company, Lift N Shift Ltd, supported the project through specialised cartage and heavy lifting operations, helping ensure these substantial components could be transported and positioned safely and efficiently.
Our scope of works included the production and supply of:
- 1 × Precast Capital – 5.6 m dia, weighing approximately 29 tonnes.
- 4 × Prestressed Pilasters – approximately 29 tonnes each.
- 20 × Prestressed Wall Panels – approximately 12 tonnes each.
- 12 × Complex Curved Edge Beams – manufactured to precise specifications to achieve the required geometry.
- 47 × Prestressed Roof Sections – forming the roof structure of the reservoir.
One of the key challenges of the Hill Street South Reservoir Project was difficult site access.
The location presented restrictions for the transportation and delivery of large, heavy precast components, requiring detailed planning around vehicle access, positioning, lifting operations, and installation sequencing. With individual components weighing up to 29 tonnes, getting each element safely to site and into its final position required close coordination between SCP, Lift N Shift, and the wider project team.
The limited access also meant that lifting operations had to be carefully planned to make the most effective use of the available working area, while maintaining safe separation between transport vehicles, lifting equipment, personnel, and the construction works.
The combination of challenging access, large component weights, complex geometries, and the number of individual elements made logistics and coordination a critical part of the project.
Engineering Complexity
The 29-tonne precast capital and four 29-tonne prestressed pilasters required detailed consideration throughout the manufacturing, transportation, and lifting process.
The 12 complex curved edge beams were another technically demanding element, requiring accurate mould fabrication and tight dimensional control to achieve the required geometry and ensure the components integrated correctly with the wider reservoir structure.
With 20 prestressed wall panels and 47 prestressed roof sections, coordination between manufacturing, transportation, lifting, and installation was critical to maintaining the project programme and ensuring each component was delivered to site ready for installation.
Precision, Collaboration, and Craftsmanship
Every component manufactured for the Hill Street South Reservoir reflects SCP’s focus on quality, precision, and structural integrity.
Our experienced in-house team managed the manufacture of the precast and prestressed elements, working closely with Fulton Hogan and our sister company Lift N Shift Ltd, who provided the specialised cartage and heavy lifting support required for these substantial components.
The result is a substantial and durable concrete structure designed to provide long-term performance and reliability for the community.
